Work and mindfulness

My attempt to create a mindful environment in my work space.

Photo of a multimedia painting by Clemencia Davda, Skye based artist. - an exercise in mindfulness.

Our choice of work is very important

Gautama Buddha called it the ‘right’ livelihood.

If we are happy with our work it flows

like a river on a beautiful day.

It makes us feel mindful, calm and contented.

We don’t need to spend years to learn to be mindful.

If we are aware of our breathing, we are mindful,

we have to keep this awareness continually.

Doing work and tackling problems mindfully

reduces our stress level. The only stress then is healthy tiredness.

We don’t even need to be in control when we make the work tasks flow.

The control is replaced with feelings of joy,

that of completing tasks with best intentions.

Recently I saw two examples of mindful work practice:

First, a plumber identified a problem in our house in a few minutes and solved

it with a new part.

I told him that he was like a magician. He moved his body mindfully.

The best part of his work was cleaning up the bathroom with a smile reflecting satisfaction.

Second, a painter and decorator, who I know well, told me that his body directed his fingers in a certain direction. This helped him to learn a new and easier technique of paining skirting boards.

This shows that mindfulness and the flow of work, through our body go together.

When we are mindful, our work is an extension of ourselves.

Our creativity is at a high level. Work then becomes effortless.

Eventually, everything we do is in line with our purpose.

Then what we do emerges from our state of being, not stressful goals.

Always be your best

You observe the light. You, the observer, depending on the quality of your observation merge with the light (the observed).

To observe is to become part what we are observing

An artist's interpretation of my passage below

Be the best you can, and more,

in everything you do.

Initially it is difficult because your mind is not trained.

It may want an easy way out.

When you are motivated to go beyond

your mind, you begin to see the result in

a short period of time. You become unconsciously competent.

You can take this experience in everything you do to shine,

to achieve excellence.

The feeling of fulfilment then leads you to be your best in everything you do.

It is beyond techniques.

You become your work, your music, your art,

and everything you do when in action.

Life is an illusion

(c) Harish Davda

(c) Harish Davda

Isn’t life an illusion at least at some level?

Often what we expect does not happen

Most goals remain unachieved by us

Sometimes things happen unexpectedly

We are then surprised and consider ourselves lucky

There is no magic formula about understanding life

The more we think about life’s reality

The more things appear unreal

Perhaps it is all a dream

We can go with the flow and enjoy the ride

There is no meaning to anything

Except what is falsely convinced by the ego

If you ever get beyond the mind

You’ll discover that there is nothing there

Just emptiness.

We can create something from emptiness

Be careful, the ego might take over.

Work in progress

Everything that we see and experience,
It is work in progress and we are learning.
Then one day something happens,
We hit that emptiness, that nothingness,
Our being has revealed itself,
It doesn't need a name or a label,
It is pure awareness,
All the memories and experiences,
Good or bad have transcended.
Attachments and duality disappear,
And we remain our true self,
As much as we can,
Waiting to be embraced by some higher power. ❤🙏

Not an easy path

When we embark on a personal growth journey,
The path is never that straight forward,
Some days we feel aware and connected,
With everyone and everything around us.
Other days, we feel constricted and frustrated.

The thing is, it is all a learning experience,
Constancy in our journey is important,
Whether through prayers, meditation or other means,
To remain motivated and grow,
At our own pace. 🙏

When you are unwell.

When you feel unwell with a cold or any other health issues, besides rest, your body is asking for your attention. When you give that attention there is something deeper. Give some time to this part of you. This is probably your 'inner being' or your 'consciousness' Observe within to see what it is saying. It may be asking questions which only you can answer. For example, it may ask:

  • Who are you?
  • Why are you here?
  • Where are you going?
  • What do you need to do?

Or, it may ask:

  • What are you grateful for?
  • What is your life's purpose?
  • How will your deal with those issues at work?
  • How will you improve your personal relationship with someone close to you?

Such precious moments throw up questions, the answers of which do not come from your mind - the answers come from a much deeper place - your inner being.

Just to clarify, being unwell does not mean physically unwell. The insights can come in other situations such as when being sad, feeling low or even depressed. Or, in your meditation or a prayer. Such triggers are invaluable if we deal with them wisely and skilfully.

Recently I had a bad cold and spent few days in bed: I was really suffering.  Then  after my meditation on day one, a number of questions came up - the answers included identifying what I was grateful for, titles and firm ideas about new workshops and confirming my purpose.

Reach out to yourself from within. It may change your life and create more joy for you :-) . It may serve you better than your analytical mind.

Space and Meditation

Photo (c) Harish Davda 2021

Photo (c) Harish Davda 2021

This blog is based on questions I'm often asked about meditation.

If I'm asked a question, 'what is meditation? Or, 'why should I meditate?' my answer is very simple:

1. Regular meditation helps us to experience what is outside of our thinking and thoughts. We spend over 95% of our waking hours in our head, mind, our thinking. We identify with the majority of our thoughts.  We gain a vast amount of knowledge through formal and informal learning and by analysing.

2. Meditation, if properly practiced takes us out of our thinking mind and we are then able to experience a reality different from our inquiring mind. Initially, this could only be for one or two minutes at a time. This is where our true self - our consciousness resides, outside of our mind in space. With experience we can create space even outside of our meditation. For example, when you are looking at a tree or a mountain top, you learn to come out of your judgemental and enquiring mind. You do not ask questions, you simply be and experience your presence and the presence of everything and everyone around you. You become your authentic self instead of a person, a slave to your egoic personality. Gradually, your personality will begin to change, you become in charge of your thoughts even if initially it's for a few minutes a day.

3. So all the above is possible with a few minutes of daily meditation. Initially you mind, your ego will fight with you. It will tell you that

- You don't have time.
- Other things are more important.
- Don't waste your time.
- You cannot control your thoughts etc.

You have to decide who is in charge, your mind/thoughts/ego or your authentic self - your consciousness.

I hope you find this blog useful.
